XM Overview
XM Group (Trading Point of Financial Instruments) has been in operation since 2009 and serves over 5 million clients from 196 countries. They're regulated by ASIC, CySEC, IFSC, and DFSA — solid credentials for a retail broker. XM is particularly popular in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
Account Types
XM offers four main account types:
- Micro Account — minimum deposit $5, lots in micro units. Good for beginners.
- Standard Account — standard lots, no commission, spreads from 1.6 pips on EURUSD
- XM Ultra Low — tighter spreads from 0.6 pips, no commission
- Shares Account — for stock CFD trading only
Notably, XM does not offer a raw/ECN zero-commission account the way IC Markets or Pepperstone do. This is their main weakness for professional EA traders.
Spreads for EA Traders
XM's spreads are competitive for a standard account broker but trail behind true ECN brokers. On EURUSD, the Ultra Low account averages 0.6 pips — for scalping EAs that target 5–10 pips, a 0.6-pip spread represents 6–12% of your profit target consumed by spread cost.
For swing trading EAs targeting 50+ pips, XM's spreads are less of a concern and the lower minimum deposit becomes an advantage.
EA Compatibility
XM supports MT4 and MT5 and allows automated trading without restriction. Scalping, hedging, and grid strategies are all permitted. They offer a free VPS for accounts with $5,000+ balance or 5+ lots/month volume.
Cashback Through Pipstone.ai
XM clients connected through Pipstone.ai earn up to $2.80/lot cashback on forex majors. This partially offsets the wider spreads compared to ECN alternatives.
The Verdict
XM is best suited to: beginners (low minimum deposit), manual traders who prefer no-commission accounts, and swing/position traders for whom spread is less critical. For high-frequency scalping EAs, IC Markets or Pepperstone offer better cost structures.
Best for: Beginners and manual swing traders. Not ideal for high-frequency EA scalping.
